Company History

In 2004-2005 Fruit Distributors, Wrightway Food Service and Dickerson Foods joined to form one of Ohio's largest locally owned suppliers of food and supplies to the food service industry.

The journey which led to RightWay Food Service began in 1932 when Herman Williams founded Fruit Distributors and began selling fresh produce to the public, schools and restaurants. In the 1970's Fruit Distributors expanded into a full line food service supplier and became the largest locally owned food service supplier in the Lima area. In 2000 Fruit Distributors became a division of The Powell Company, Ltd. (the area's largest janitorial/sanitation supplier) and further expanded its product lines to include a wide variety of paper and sanitation products. In 2001, Fruit Distributors relocated to a new HACCP compliant facility with state-of-the-art refrigeration facilities. Williams' family descendents continue to work in the RightWay Food Service company today.

Dickerson Foods was founded in the 1940's in Marion, Ohio when Harold Dickerson started selling New Era potato chips out of a truck and later began providing cheese and other products to his customers by request. In 1955 a sales staff was added. In the mid 1970's Frito-Lay bought New Era, which allowed Dickerson to expand their product offerings. Soon thereafter Dickerson added Plee-Zing and similar well-known brands to become a full line food distributor. In 1996 Harold Dickerson's grandson, Kent Smith and business partner, Joe Kraus purchased Dickerson Foods and continued Dickerson's growth to become one of the largest independent food distributors in central Ohio. In April 2005 the Powell Company purchased Dickerson foods and continues its operation in Marion, Ohio.

In 1960 the John Siegler Company of Lima, Ohio began offering limited food items to restaurants. In 1984 Jim Wright purchased the John Siegler Company and in 1985 changed the name to Wrightway Food Service. Wrightway continually expanded its food offerings and services through the start of the new millennium and built a large, geographically dispersed base of customers in west central Ohio. In November 2004 the Powell Company purchased Wrightway Food Service and combined its operations with Fruit Distributors.

The combination of these premier independent food service supplier facilities increased product offerings and services, rapid delivery and competitive prices. Their association with the Powell Company also allows RightWay Food Service to offer a wide variety of paper and sanitation supplies at economical prices. Local ownership and employees and local distribution facilities and offices help RightWay Food Service to be more sensitive and responsive to the needs of west central Ohio food service organizations. The names have changed but the commitment to high quality food services will grow even stronger.
